The 1937 Hayden Planetarium Grace Peruvian Eclipse Expedition

The Hayden Planetarium-Grace expedition to the path of the total solar eclipse, which occurred on June 8, 1937, was planned with several well-defined objectives: to photograph the eclipse with telescopic cameras, movie, and still cameras, to paint it, observe it, and describe it to the radio listeners, visitors to the planetarium, and readers of The Sky (monthly magazine of the Planetarium).

George Clyde Fisher, known as Clyde, was a scientist and educator who worked for the American Museum of Natural History (AMNH) from 1913 until his retirement in 1941. He worked in the Department of Education before his involvement in the development of the Astronomy department. He was instrumental in the planning and execution of the Hayden Planetarium, and acted as its first curator when it opened in 1935. as well as organized and led the 1937 AMNH Grace-Peruvian Eclipse Expedition.

The 1931 Shippee-Johnson aerial photographic expedition to Peru

In 1931 Walter O. Runcie joins the Shippee-Johnson aerial photographic expedition to Peru (Robert Shippee and George R. Johnson), and provided the expedition with 30,000 feet of film of the Colca Valley and the Southern Andes of the country. Besides the film taken from the air, he also undertook ground photography. This journey was published in The National Geographic Magazine, January 1933; “Air Adventures in Peru, Cruising among Andean Peaks, Pilots and Cameramen Discover Wondrous Works of an Ancient People.” Robert Shippee mentions W.O. Runcie as assistant photographer and film cameraman of the mission.

In 2012 we established contact with Professor Jason Weems, Assistant Professor of the History of Art Department at the University of California at Riverside, a specialist in visual art and culture in the United States who has a special interest in the impact of technology on visual material, including aerophotography. It was through him and Barbara Barbara Mathé, the Museum Archivist and Chief Librarian of Special Collections at the AMNH that we obtained the documentary film Wings Over the Andes, produced by Aerial Explorations, Inc., New York in 1932 and filmed by W. O. Runcie.

This film was was presented in Lima, Peru at the exhibition Intensidad y Altura, Aerofotografía y Mirada Interior en la Obra de Walter O. Runcie (2012) thanks to the generous support of the American Museum of Natural History AMNH, New York.

En 1931 Walter O. Runcie forma parte de la expedición fotográfica aérea del Perú Shippee-Johnson (Robert Shippee y George R. Johnson). La expedición Shippee-Johnson contó con su eficaz colaboración y él se encargó de tomar treinta mil pies de películas en la zona del Valle del Colca y los Andes del sur del país. Among the various activities carried out by Walter O. Runcie, he had the opportunity to record the geography and natural resources of the country, often accompanying the work of scientists and researchers.
Photographs by José Antonio de Lavalle García, scientist and founder of the magazine Boletín de la Compañía Administradora del Guano (1912-1932) who was in charge of the research on bird behavior and its relationship with the fertilizer in the islands of the Peruvian coast.
